Wait, Julian Sayin hasn't completed every pass?! What happened on those?
The OSU QB is on pace to set a completion-percentage record. I reviewed his 42 non-completions to see how many were his fault or even smart plays.
Julian Sayin is on pace to shatter the NCAA major-college football record for completion percentage in a season.
The Ohio State quarterback is completing 80.7% of his passes through eight games. The record is 77.4% set by Oregon’s Bo Nix in 2023 and Alabama’s Mac Jones in 2020.
Sayin has completed 176 of 218 passes for 23 touchdowns with only three interceptions, none in Big Ten play.
I decided to examine the 42 Sayin passes that didn’t find their Ohio State targets. Were they bad throws? Drops? Great plays by the opposing defense? Smart decisions to avoid potential interceptions or sacks?
I DVR all the OSU games, so I was able to review them. What is startling is how few bad plays or decisions the redshirt freshman has made. Only four passes have been dropped. That’s obviously a credit to OSU’s elite receivers, particularly Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate, but it also attests to the fact Sayin consistently throws passes that are easy to catch.
Here’s the game-by-game breakdown of the non-completions with Sayin’s stats. You can click on a few of them from my weekly DVR reviews.
